Age, With His Stealing Steps, Hath Clawed Me In His Clutch.

-Hamlet (5,1,73-4), William Shakespeare

When my mother had her first heart attack I flew out to New York to see her.  One afternoon while visiting her in her hospital room she stopped talking and gazed sadly out the window.  When I asked her what was wrong she turned her face back toward me and said, "When I was young I used to think that seventy was so old."
She died three years later.

This article brought this memory back to me.

You Can't Heal What You Refuse To Confront

I've decided I want to be a faith healer. Only instead of yelling, "Be healed!" while slamming my palm into someone's forehead, I would yell, "Get some f***ing sense!"

By which I mean show some compassion, empathy, and humbleness toward your fellow man. You know, the way Jesus always acted.

Donald Trump, Making America Great!

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Hanger Bar

This photo was on the Colfax Avenue facebook page and shows the mural painted on the side of the Hangar Bar at 8001 E Colfax Ave in Denver, CO.  I used to walk by this bar on the way to school when my family and I lived in the Compass Motor Lodge at 8675 East Colfax Ave.  I wrote this in the comments section:

I used to walk past this bar twice a day when I was at Ashley Elementary School. Some days on the way home, if I was feeling extremely brave, I would push open the front door and yell into the darkness, "Are there any airplanes in here?" And then run like hell.
Gosh, I was such a witty fifth grader.

Things I Truly Love- Coloring Books

I've been coloring in one of the new coloring books that have been published by the hundreds ( Just Add Color: Day of the Dead with artwork by Sarah Walsh) and the first one I did was frustrating.  I like to use colored pencils but the slick paper did not take up the color the way that I am used to and I felt more like I was scrubbing the color on than actually coloring.  So I did a small  coloring experiment.  I finished the color pencil page and then colored another page with art markers and then a third page using crayons.  Results below.

Color pencils.  The paper just doesn't pull in the color and the slickness makes it hard to cover all that bright white paper.

Markers.  Color absorbs well but  I still felt like I was scrubbing the color on.

Crayons.  Actually felt like I was coloring and covered well but I don't remember crayons being this waxy.

So I've decided that I will not use color pencils in this book but markers and crayons.  I think the problem  I had with the markers was because I bought a cheap set at Target and they dried out even as I was using them.  A better quality set should take care of that problem.

Drop Dead

October 30, 1975, New York City is on the verge of bankruptcy when President Gerald Ford announces he will not give NYC any federal assistance to help it avoid defaulting on its outstanding loans. The Daily News responses to this decision by printing this infamous headline.

No Beer, Coke

October 28, 1919, the National Prohibition Act (a.k.a. The Volstead Act) went into effect giving Federal and state governments the power to enforce the 18th amendment. The 18th amendment banned the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors in the United States.
